Midpoint Reflection

Writer: humaabbashumaabbas

As I reach the halfway point in my learning journey, I am reflecting on what I have learned and how it has shaped my understanding of health promotion. This experience has been eye-opening, helping me explore key concepts, theories, and frameworks that guide effective public health initiatives.

One of the most important things I have discovered is the significance of using an evidence-based approach in health promotion. Initially, I believed that simply raising awareness would be enough to encourage healthier behaviors. However, I now understand that health promotion must be backed by scientific research, reliable data, and proven strategies. Learning to assess credible sources, such as peer-reviewed journals and reports from reliable organizations has been crucial in developing a well-informed perspective.

I have also explored various health promotion theories, such as the Health Belief Model and the Social Determinants of Health framework. These theories help explain why people make certain health choices and how interventions can be designed to support positive behavior change. Additionally, I have gained a deeper appreciation for the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, which highlights the importance of building healthy public policies, creating supportive environments, and strengthening community action.

In my personal and professional life, I see the importance of applying these concepts to improve communication and promote health literacy. Whether in a healthcare setting or everyday interactions, understanding the role of policy, social factors, and behavioral science helps create more effective health promotion strategies.

One challenge I have faced is navigating the vast amount of health information available. Identifying trustworthy resources and avoiding misinformation has been a learning curve, but it has strengthened my research skills. Moving forward, I want to deepen my knowledge of behavior change strategies and policy-making in health promotion. Understanding how to implement sustainable and equitable health interventions will be key to making a lasting impact in public health. I want to use all I learn to actively work on early childhood caries prevention in Ontario.  Getting some insight regarding the topic for my assignment, I believe finding effective ways to support behavior change is key to making a real impact. I look forward to exploring this topic more and using my knowledge to contribute to dental health promotion.
